Modern Medicine: Drugs for Treating Migraine

Ergotamine : It should be used where ordinary analgesics prove ineffective. When, given at the initial stage, it will affect dramatically, even in lower doses. The drug is a potent vasoconstrictor and should be used in managing acute migraine, but not for prophylaxis (preventional purposes). The drug must not be given during any stage of pregnancy. It is useful in migraine, vascular and cluster forms headaches.

Dose : 1 mg at an interval of of half-an-hour but total dose must not exceed 6 mg.

Contraindications : Severe hypertension, coronary artery disease, impaired liver and kidney functions, pregnancy, lactation, septic condition, peripheral occlusive or vascular disease.

Side-effects : G-l disturbances, pallor, coldness and tingling of exremities, nausea and vomiting.

Drug interactions : Betablockers, and contraceptives, erythromycim, methylsergide, Consult your doctor for additional information in this and/or any other aspect.

Tab Vasograin : 10 mg tablets. Dosage, as indicated above but do not exceed the stated maximum dose.

Flunarizine : This is a basic ingredient and trade names are Nonugrain, Sibelium, Flunarin. Each tablet contains 5 or 10 mg of the drug. It has proven anti-migraine effect, is a calcium antagonist, used as prophylaxis of common and classical migraine.

Dosage : For persons above 45 kgs 10 mg, and for those below 45 kgs 5 mg, at night. Not safe for Paedriatics, during pregnancy, lactation periods and old age.

Special Precautions : Do not drive or operate machinery, as drowsiness may ensue during its use.

Side-effects : Depression, drwosiness, headache, gain in weight, ex pyramidal reactions, dry mouth, gastric pain, insomnia.

Durg interactions : Consult your doctor.

Note : In some cases tablets of Inderal (10,40 or 80 mg) are given as prophylaxis of migraine but must be used under medical advice and supervision only and not of your own. Usual dose is 40 mg twice daily but total dose, during 24 hours, must not exceed 160 mg (in divided doses).
