Modern Medicine: Drugs for Treating Vertigo, Nausea, Vomiting And Motion-Sickness

The following drugs which may be used according to symptoms indicated against each drug, (only brand names given)

Avomine : (5 mg tablets of promethazine theolate).

Used extensively for treating nausea, vomiting and motion sickness. For moton sickness : 1 Tab the night before or 2 hours prior to start of journey. For Nausea and vomiting : 1 Tablet each in the morning and evening-theafter one tablet at night only. Do not use in Pregnancy and for children.

Side-effects : Dry mouth, drowsiness, blurred vision, G.I. disturbances, restlessness.

Domstal: (10 mg tablets of Domperidone). Used for nausea and vomiting. For adults 20-40 mg thrice daily.

Do not use for pregnant ladies and children : But, it can also be used after chemotherapy under advice from the doctor. Consult your doctor for additional drug-reactions and side-effects In chemotherapy. It may be given 0.3 mg/per kg body weight, 3-4 times daily before meals and at bed-time.

Gravol/Dramamine : (50 mg tablets of Dimenhydrinate). Also available in injecton and liquid form. Indicated in Vertigo.Nausca. Vomiting and Meniere’s Syndrome. Dosage : 1 -2 Tablets, 2-3 times daily. Not meant for pregnant ladies and children. Side effects include dizziness and and drowsiness. Do not use alcohol or CNS depressants while using this medicine.

Perinorm : (10 mg tablets of Metochlopramide). Also available in liquid and injection form. Used for disorders like Nausea, Vomiting, Gastritis, Reflux acsophagitis, Hiccups. Give one tablet twice daily. Read literature for other details.

Siquil : (10 mg tablets of Trifluopromazine). Also available in injection form. Used in disorders like Nausea, Vomiting, Tension, Anxiety and Psychiatric Disorders, 20 mg dose (divided) is usually given, but consult literature for more details.

Do not use for children, pregnant ladies and elderly persons, in comatose state, liver damage, lactation, epilepsy, subcortical brain damage, patients using large doses of hynotics, Parkinsanism, liver damage. Do not use alcohol and CNS depressants. Additional drug reactions : CNS disturbances that include impaired alertness, hypotenion (Low Blood Pressure), blood changes, Ocular changes and anti-cholinergic effects.

Stemitil: (5 and 25 mg tablets of Prochlorperazine). Also available in injection form. Dose : 5 mg 2/3 times daily or higher concentration in more severe cases, Indicated in Meniere’s disease, Migraine, labyrinthitis, other aural vertigo, nausea and vomiting. Contra-indiatioins are the same as for siquil. Drug-interactions : Alcohol, CNS depressants and alpha-blockers. Additional drug reactions include Insomnia, drowsiness. Hypotension, skin reactions. Use with utmost caution, in the children, elderly, pregnancy, lactation, impaired liver function, undiagnosed and prolonged vomiting, cardio-vascular disease, epilepsy, bone marrow depression etc.

Tomid : (10 mg tablets of Metoclopramide). Also available in syrup form. Used to dispel symptoms of motion sickness, vomiting due to some other causes. Daily dose is lOmg twice daily for adults and 1-5 twice daily for children (above 12 years). Drug is contra-indicated in breast cancer, lactation, pregnancy, recent G. I. surgery. Must not be used in renal or hepatic insufficiency, elderly persons, epilepsy etc. Drug reactions : Drowsiness, extrapyramidal reactions, restivity, depression, neurolepic malignant syndrome, malignant syndrome, raised blood prolactin.

Vertin : (8 mg tablets of Betahistine-di-Hcl). Use for Meniere’s syndrome and vertigo. Do not use in pregnancy, lactation, children below 12 years etc. in peptic ulcer and bronchial asthma, also. Elderly. Dose : 1-2 tablets after meals, thrice daily. It can cause gatric upset also. Do not use antihistamines alongside this drug, as they contradict each other.

Note: Before concluding this chapter, it is necessary to point out that other Nervous disorders have been deliberately left out, because such cases a physician’s counsel, guidance and in direction is all the more necessary, as is also in the case of other disorders. Readers, in their own interest, must not endeavour and venture to replace for a doctor’s treatment. In some diseases symptoms are marked or overlapping, in which situation a patient is not competent enough to distinguish symptoms of one disease from those of the other.
