Music Therapy: Guided Imagery and Music

GIM or Guided Imagery and Music is a technique in which the act of listening to classical music is combined with a relaxed state of mind and body in order to evoke imagery for the purpose of self-actualisation.

The imagery evoked reflects aspects of the self and is used by the client, with the aid of the therapist.

GIM does not intend to cure or treat symptoms; rather, it is in search of the client’s inner awareness.

There is a belief that everyone can understand his or her problems and has the ability to overcome the problem within the self. Thus, GIM is based on humanistic therapy, influenced by Abraham Maslow and Jung.
