Modern Medicine: Anti-infective Eye Preparations

Sulphaetammde Sodium Eye-Drops

These are commonly used to treat trachoma, Blepharitis, Conjunctivitis, iritis, Corneal ulcer, ophthalmia of the new-born, injury of eyes, as prophylaxis of ocular infections after injuries/ Burns, Pre/Post operative surgery.
Contraindications Hypersensitivity
Special Precautions Do not touch dropper/Tip and discontinue use of irritation persists
Dosage 1-2 drops 3-4 times daily
Brands Abbucid’, optisol, phenosulf, sulfaren, Locula, Chlormide,Andremide, Bleph, Syncula, Zinco-Sulpha, Setride, Cellumide eye drops

Norfloxacin Eye-Drops

Indications, Keratitis, Conjunctivits, Corneal ulcers, Prevention of ocular infections, after damage from Physical/ chemical agents, Before / after surgery (Note: these drops are also used in Various ear infections also).
Contraindications and Precautions:- as detailed above
Dosage:- 1-2 drops every 15-30 Minutes in acute infections, 1-2 drops, 2-6 times daily in moderate infection, Acute/chronic Trachoma- 2 drops in each eye 2-4 times daily
Not recommeded for Paedreatics, Pregnancy and lactation. Use with utmost Caution in the elderly patients.

Ciprofloxin Eye Drops

Indicatious:- Acute/Subacute Conjunctivitis, Muconpurulant conjunctivits, Conjunctivitis, Blepharitis boderial Corneal ulcer, Preoperative Prophyloaxis in ocular surgery, treatment of Pre/Post operative infections.
Dosage:- 1-2 drops in the affected ryes (A hourly) Contra-indicatious:- I [ypersensitb it)
Side-effects:-Milcl / temporary smarting sensation and Conjunctival Congestions
Use with Caution in the case oj elderly, infants, Children, lactating/pregnant Indies
Brands:- Adiflox, Bekacin E, Cifran, Ciplox, (also ointments), Ciprobid, Conflox, Flocy Floxigard, < I’Flox, Quinbact, Quintor, zoptic zoxan eye drops

Gentamycin Eye Drops

Indications :-External bacterial infection of the eye and eye-lid, Pre/Post operative use.
Dosage:-l-3 drops, 3-4 times daily
Contra indications and special Precautious, and side effects:-As mationed earlier

Chloramphemical Eye Drops

Indications:- Irritation, Bacterial Conjunctivitis, Trachoma, Ocula infections, corneal ulcer
Infections – Irritation, Bacterial conjunctivitis, Trachoma, ocular ulcerations.
Contra-indications:- Pregnancy, hypersensitivity
Side-effects:- Irritation, hypersensitivity reactions.
Special Preacautions:- Possibility of hazard of aplastic anaemia should be borne in mind; (though rare chances of occurrence). Discontinue its use if some allergic reactions surface.
Dosage:- Instill 1 -2 drops in the affected eye
Brands:- Andrecin, Chlorocol, Chloromycetin (Applicaps), Entermycin, Enteromnycin, Metamycin, Mycin; Ocuchlor, Optomycetin, Paraxen, soflicaps, (also ointment), Vanmycetin, (opticops).
Note:- As for soflicaps squeeze the soflicap into lower conjuctival sac 2-3 times daily, and ointment should also be used 2-3 times. In case of opticops, cut the tapering of opticop and squeeze out the ointment over the surface of the affected eye. Patients may feel some haziness but the same usually disappears within short time after use.

Miconazole

It is indicated in fungal infections of the eye. Discontinue use if there is hypersensitivity to the ingredient, drug toxicity Safety in pregnancy is not established, hence use with care.
Dosage:- Apply 4-5 times daily or as directed by the physician. Brand:- Micoptic
Anti Allergic and Anti-inflammatory Eye Preparations Indications:- Allergy and inflammation:
Contra-indications:- Fungal infections. Glaucoma, Viral, tuberculous or purulent infections. Hypersensitivity to the ingredient.
Caution:- Continuous use may result in glaucoma, Cataract, fungal infections, perforation. Do not use in pregnancy and for children.
Side-effect:- Headache, transient irritation, perforation, raised intraocular pressure.
Dosage:- 1-2 drops into the affected eye (S) 1-2 hours or as directed by the physician.
Do not use without medical advice.

Miscellaneous Eye Drops

Hereunder some eye-preparations are being mentioned against which leading symptoms have been indicated. Hence, such preparations should be employed only for specific disorders, (mentioned against each remedy). Rest of the precautions, side-effects, Contra-inditious etc are almost the same which have been indicated earlier, though with some exceptions.
Andre Eye Drops:- Conjunctivitis
Andre-I-Cool:- Redness & irritation of the eye, after removal of contact lens
Bendzon:- Conjunctivitis
Caracisol:- Initial opacity of the eye
Catalin:- Primary cataract, Senile traumatic and diabetic
Clearine:- Occular inflammation.
Healon:- Cornea, /Cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, transplant surgery, trauma surgery, Posterio segment surgery (Not to be used by anyone except the surgeons)
Mezol:- Ocular inflammation.
Moisol:- Xerophthalmia; Chronic Conjunctivial irritation in geniscopy, Conjunctivitis Sicca.
Optrex Eye lotion:- For the relief of minor eye strain and/or irritation, soothes and refreshes tired and sore eye Caused by closed eye-work like prolonged reading, writing, T.V. viewing, dust, smoke or driving. Read carefully instructions for use, indicated in the relevant literature.
Proto-Boric:- Inflammatory ocular infections, Corneal ulcer. Zincula:- Ocular infections
