Pranayama: Elementary Preparations

1. Select a clean, airy and well-ventilated place.

2. Avoid fan, direct sunlight, draught of air etc.

3. Wear loose clothes, no watch and no glasses.

4. Keep your sole very clean and dry.

5. Do all the exercises leisurely without strain, hurry, anxiety etc.

6. When tired or in between asanas, always rest breathing at the stomach region.

7. Become aware of the nostrils and keep them ‘flared’ to feel the flow of the current of air.

8. Sniff often to enhance the sensitivity.

9. Meditate before completing the sadhana.

10. Do not eat/drink before a lapse of 15-20 minutes.

11. Drink 2-3 glasses of water before sadhana.

12. Always go to shavasana after one series of practices before going to another. Lie on the ground completely at ease with legs and hands separated with palms open. Use a thin pillow for head if needed. This posture relaxes the body and allows prana to be easily absorbed and distributed.

13. Become familiar with the various organs of the body such as abdomen, stomach, diaphragm etc. Sketch below is of some help. Focus your attention on the relevant organ during the exercise such as abdomen etc. The diaphragm is shaped like an inverted cup.
