Modern Medicine: Treatment for Scabies

It is a skin infection caused by the ‘ITCH’ mite (Sarcoptes scabiei’). Scabies generally occurs at night when there in incessant, severe and inolerable itching, Causing great restivity, red papules and smarting. The female mite tunnels in the skin so as to lay her eggs and the newly hatched mites easily pass from one person to another. If a person is suffering from the ‘itch’, he willpass on the infection to other members in the family. So all the members and their clothes are required to be discinfected including beadding items.

Scabizides like Benzyl Benzonate malathion Monosulphiram, Crotamitons and indane are potent enough to kill the mite.

Available trade brands are Ascabiol, Batrafen, Benzocab. Calcrem, Clomycin, Crotorax, Dactacort, Daktarin, Ecanol, Emscab, Gale, etc, available in lotion/cream form when the area infected is large, it is better to applylotion over the whole body, but from neck downwards, keep eyes, face and neck fully protected. If the area is limited, preferably apply cream. But treat all the members in the family – Therapy has to be continued for 3 Consecutive days. Clip your nails and apply lotion / cream to toes and fingers also. More sensitive skins are most likely to react to local applications, hence do not persist with therapy if there is aggravation / worsening ofthe symptoms. Do not treat children, pregnant and lactating ladies, aged and debitatated persons of your own, but seek medical guidance before use.
