This is a little-known variation of lily of the valley. On last researching its origin several years ago, it became apparent that this scent has become obscure enough to have escaped from the minds of many actively working perfumers and aromatherapists. The raw flower from which the essential oil would be derived apparently grows only in a small area in France. Because of its rarity, it is seldom seen in a true essential.
If it were commercially produced, it may well be a key ingredient in the famed French perfumes that sell for thousands of dollars per ounce. In fact, one perfumer estimated the cost of producing a true muguet essential at approximately $2,000 for four ounces—and that’s wholesale price! As far as the synthetics are concerned, after contacting over a dozen different commercial suppliers, I only found three who claimed to produce a synthetic muguet oil. One of those actually used the names muguet and lily of the valley interchangeably, and did not offer two distinctly separate scents.
Another had an actual muguet synthetic that had a very weak, diluted scent. The third seemed to understand the uniqueness of this obscure fragrance and produced a synthetic true to the spirit of the actual essential. This is difficult to find but it is priceless to those who understand and can utilize its virtue.
