Homeopathy: Potency and Repetition of Dose

This has always been a controversial issue, but a few simple rules may be given. Involved in the problem are a careful consideration of the Vital Force of the patient, the disease force and the drug force (potency and repetition).

(1) If pathology is advanced and there are no characteristic (homoeopathic) indications, start with a low potency, e.g. 30th potency.

(2) In complaints of the skin start with 30th or 200th and go higher as the patient improves, and the lower potency no longer holds good.

(3) When the patient’s vitality is low (prolonged illness, patient is bed-ridden) start with 200th and go higher with improvement and the lower potency ceases to act.

(4) When patient’s vitality is high (irrespective of whether a child or an old patient) and if the symptoms of the remedy (Generals, Modalities and Peculiar symptoms) match those of the patient well, give high, say 1M, one or two doses, 12 hourly. Let the repetition be decided according to the patient’s response, i.e., repeat when the action of the earlier dose stops. Don’t be afraid to repeat or go to higher potency if the response is sluggish; a few more doses will be needed to complete the cure.

(5) The higher the potency the less frequent the repetition needed.

(6) Give time for each dose of the medicine to act (especially 1M and 10M).

(7) STOP medication when patient reports at least 80% improvement.
