First-Aid: How to Give First-Aid for Ear, Under Water Diving and Maxillofacial Injuries

EAR INJURY

It is caused by a direct blow to the ear. A hematoma forms due to accumulation of blood between the external ear cartilage and perichondrium.

First aid

1. Apply an ice pack locally.
2. Apply compression over the injured ear.
3. Send him to a hospital immediately.

UNDER WATER DIVING INJURY

With under water diving, there is increase in pressure on the ear drums from outside, while the eustachian tube is unable to equalize pressure. The ear drums may rupture below the depth of 3 meters. It causes severe pain in the ear.

First Aid

Send him to a hospital immediately.

MAXILLOFACIAL INJURIES

A blow to the upper jaw causes injuries to the maxilla and zygomatic bone, as in boxing. The condition is diagnosed by the following features.

1. One half of a cheek may feel numb.
2. There is pain and tenderness over the affected bones. Swelling may be present over the side of the injury.
3. Teeth may be out of alignment.
4. Chewing or biting on a folded cloth causes pain.
5. Bony deformity may be seen by looking at both cheekbones from the top of the patients head.

First aid

1. Apply ice locally to relieve pain.
2. Give paracetamol for pain.
3. Send him to a hospital immediately.
